Why Some Patients Stop Ketamine Therapy Early

Understanding Why Some Patients Stop Ketamine Therapy Early

Ketamine therapy and esketamine (Spravato) treatment offer real hope for many who have not found relief elsewhere. But not every patient continues with treatment long-term — some stop after only a few sessions or weeks. These decisions are not failures but important moments of reflection about what is and isn’t working, both medically and personally. It is important to understand what does not work in the pursuit of what does.  The Lumin Health treatment program is carefully designed to talk with patients about how treatment is going and to be helpful even if treatment is not delivering the hoped-for results.  Our goal is shared: to find a way to improve symptoms.  If ketamine or esketamine isn’t the way forward we will help you find one that is.,

Non-Response to Ketamine / Esketamine

Despite ketamine’s growing promise as a robust and fast-acting treatment for mental health conditions like treatment-resistant depression, not everyone experiences benefit. Some patients may complete six to eight sessions — the point at which clinicians often evaluate effectiveness — without meaningful symptom change. Others may notice small shifts that don’t feel significant enough to continue. In these cases, it’s reasonable to pause.

Insurance Realities: Getting Ketamine Covered by Insurance

Insurance coverage and cost play a significant role. While Spravato is FDA-approved and usually insurance-covered, IV or intramuscular ketamine is often out-of-pocket. Even with insurance, co-pays and logistical demands can weigh heavily. Some patients discontinue when financial or scheduling barriers become unsustainable. At Lumin Health, these realities are always acknowledged in treatment planning, ensuring that decisions are made with transparency and support.  If cost becomes an issue, we hope that a person feels comfortable enough with our staff to bring it up as we try to work with everyone to generate a program that is sustainable.

Next Treatment Steps

Discontinuing ketamine therapy does not mean the end of care. Patients who do not continue may:

  • Explore other pharmacological options, including different classes of antidepressants or augmenting agents.
  • Consider non-medication treatments such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
  • Re-engage psychotherapy during or after the ketamine trial, making use of any small gains in openness or energy.
  • Revisit ketamine or Spravato in the future, as individual readiness and biology may change over time.

Reflecting on Early Discontinuation of Ketamine at Lumin Health

Stopping ketamine therapy early is not a sign of defeat. For some, it is simply the recognition that this path does not serve them at this time. For others, it opens the door to new approaches. At Lumin Health, we see discontinuation not as the end of the story, but as part of an ongoing process of care. Every patient deserves options, and every decision about treatment deserves respect.

Please note that we may refer to ketamine, esketamine, and Spravato relatively interchangeably. This is due to the inherent similarities in chemical makeup between ketamine and esketamine, and their similar effects on mental health conditions. In the event that this creates confusion, don't hesitate to reach out to Lumin Health staff to ask any questions about treatment at hello@lumin.health or by scheduling a free consultation.
