Please note that throughout this blog, we may refer to ketamine, esketamine, and Spravato relatively interchangeably. This is due to the inherent similarities in chemical makeup between ketamine and esketamine, and their similar effects on mental health conditions. Don't hesitate to reach out to Lumin Health staff to ask any questions about treatment at hello@lumin.health or by scheduling a free consultation.

Dr. Ben Yudkoff, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer at Lumin Health, hosted a Reddit AMA on r/TherapeuticKetamine community on March 6th, 2026. trikeAccordingly asks:

What can a patient do to prevent K-bladder?

Answer from Dr. Ben Yudkoff, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Lumin Health:

K-bladder, or ulcerative cystitis, is a condition that occurs when ketamine and its breakdown products – norketamine/hydroxynorketamine – irritate the lining of the bladder. Replace with italic/bold rich text: 'There are very few examples…' with 'very few' emphasized. when people are taking the medication in a medical protocol. There is one article published a couple of years back as a case report…. The incidence of ulcerative cystitis is very low when the exposure to ketamine/esketamine occurs in the context of a treatment protocol. That said, for people who are worried, I recommend hydrating after treatment – good for the body, in general, and also to help flush the bladder – and watching for symptoms.
